Espace Georges Brassens / Timeline of Duality

Matthieu Crimersmois / Timeline of duality - 2014
Bois, bandes VHS, micro, système son.
200x200x100 cm

Matthew Crimersmois present a piece having the function of a scenic musical instrument. This means that the viewer is invited to play a kind of enormous experimental guitar in which there is a scene showing a child invaded by VHS tapes, coming straight from the 80/90 years.
Timeline of duality the title of the work is the question of the construction of a human being with sound recorded past. Can we totally get rid of his roots or are we doomed to build ourselves with them inevitably?
Here the VHS tape - mass medium representing more than one generation - has become a sound accessory but also transforms into its own decor. Failing to be replaced today by the digital and therefore immaterial, this analog carrier are two other features revealed by its aesthetic potential.

In the continuity of his work, Matthew Crimersmois diverts the recording medium to something metaphorical and functional at a time, mixing experimental instrument making, set design and sound installation.
